Throughout my journalistic career I have interviewed countless people, some more prominent than others. From presidents and innovators who changed the history of the world, to economists, lawyers, police officers, firefighters, artists, writers, designers, students, social leaders, guerrillas, beggars, immigrants or people in different areas who had a story to tell.
However, the most successful and talked-about interview of all has been the one I did with my mother. At the time, my mother was 75 years old and sounded vital, genuine, loving. Furthermore, she looked beautiful, elegant and flirtatious. It was a talk in which we talked about her life, her story as an immigrant, her family dynamics, some recurring anecdotes in our after-dinner conversations, and what it meant to her to be the mother of a journalist like me. In that conversation we bared our souls and ended up melting into an embrace sealed with tears. It is a testimony of immense emotional value that your children and grandchildren treasure. It is simply priceless.
My father, a little jealous, upon seeing the success that interview had had, asked me to record a similar video one day. I was determined to do it because if anyone had fascinating stories to tell and an intense and full life, it was him. I thought I had time to record it, but I was wrong. I have been left with that great debt because my father is no longer here. I no longer have those magnificent stories, in his own voice, that marked his life and enriched mine, as well as family history.
Time passes, memories fade, photos are lost, videos are deleted or people die. At some price, I finally understood the importance of discovering and documenting the life story of our parents and grandparents and also our own.
